Letter from FRP Canada to Paediatrics & Child Health, published March 2013

In December 2012, the Canadian Paediatric Society and the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry published a Commentary titled The promise of the early years: How long should children wait? (downloadable from the CPS website). FRP Canada’s letter encouraged the inclusion of family resource organizations within inter-disciplinary initiatives aimed at improving support for children and families. Dr. Robin Williams responded.

How Canada’s family resource programs contribute to integrated early childhood and family support systems, February 2013

This paper is a response to the Early Years Study 3, authored by Margaret Norrie McCain, J. Fraser Mustard and Kerry McCuaig, that advocates for the creation of integrated systems of support for young children and their families across Canada. The proposed early child development and parenting centres would combine child care, pre-school and parenting supports “from pregnancy on” into “a single accessible early childhood program.”

Executive Summary

Canadians are currently witnessing a significant change in the delivery of services for parents and their young children. In many jurisdictions, programs that relate to the care and well-being of young children are moving toward an educational model. Current policy has designated educational systems as the main producers of the skills required by the modern economy.

This paper summarizes FRP Canada’s response to the reorganization of early childhood services. It emphasizes the need to complement school-based programs with a broad spectrum of community-based supports for families and young children and makes recommendations for collaborative solutions to ensure that all children in Canada have a fair chance for health and happiness in a prosperous economy. . . . .   Read the whole document
